When it comes to the translation of an English document into a foreign language, we believe it should always be performed by a native speaker of that language.
We recently completed a test translation for a new client, which involved the translation of a document from English into Italian. The client then had the document checked by a British staff member with Italian language qualifications and contacted us to highlight what it believed were errors in the translated text.
When our native Italian translator reviewed the revised document, it became clear that a series of misjudged errors had been introduced into the originally accurate text. These were obvious errors to a native Italian with a close knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of the language and an insight into the technical subject matter.
In our experience, it is vital that translators are native in the language that they are translating into, to ensure optimum accuracy and quality are achieved. Ideally, translators should also have a good working knowledge of the subject matter or industry to which the document relates.
