Translating technical text can be notoriously fiddly. The original language text often exists in a variety of formats – whether that be manuals, user guides, data sheets or technical drawings. Translation in this area requires a significant eye for detail and, of course, know-how in making the process as smooth as possible.
It’s reassuring to know, therefore, that Peak Translations’ translation memory software is the perfect match for technical translations.
Here are some helpful pointers on translation memory software.
What is translation memory software?
Translation software stores all translations in a memory database which means the exact phraseology we’ve used previously for a client is there to be called upon. Not only does this ensure a consistency of message across multiple communications, it saves cost since the number of words requiring translation is reduced.
Peak Translations has been using the market-leading SDL Trados translation memory software for some 30 years. As a result, we’ve built up a highly impressive memory for each of our clients, guaranteeing them complete confidentiality and maximised efficiency.
Can the software handle different file formats?
It certainly can and this is perhaps one of its key advantages. Our software can work with a large range of files types with popular examples being .docx, .xlsx, .ppt. and .html.
Our systems are so sophisticated that we can even extract text from technical drawings such as AutoCAD, as well as re-insert the translation.
The complete list is too extensive to include here although we’re happy to say there hasn’t been a file format that has foxed us yet!
Are there any additional formatting charges?
Whilst we can work with .pdf documents, they do usually incur additional formatting costs since the original source files are not available. This is particularly the case when they are .pdf generated through scanning rather than from another piece of software.
Similarly, .pdfs can’t be recreated without the original artwork/source files although we’re more than happy to quote for the associated costs of desktop publishing in such instances.
Can Peak return the translation in the same format it’s received?
We recognise that providing our translated copy in exactly the same format as your original format saves you significant time and cost. Added to that, it provides you with the reassurance that all your branded material, regardless of the language in which it is delivered, is presented to the same impeccable and consistent standard.
All we need is access to the editable source files. It’s perhaps worth pointing out that any files you share with us are only ever shared with our translators and interpreters through a secure data transfer system. That’s just one of the ISO quality standards to which we adhere.
What can I do to help the translation process?
It’s super helpful to us to know as much as possible about the process at your end. If your original text exists in a format we can work with, the sooner we know that the better. After all, why spend time reformatting the text yourself when our software can handle its existing format with ease?
